Somebody who says they are not a developer posted what their app costs to run, on a public thread about what people had built with an AI coding tool:

I am not a developer and super new to this stuff of building things with Codex or Claude Code … In the past week alone, i have built a CRM which lets me send 500 sms a day, 500 emails a day, and it has costed me $45 in hosting and database.

Two plan fees and two meters. That is the shape of what a working app costs every month, and almost nothing written about app cost describes it. Almost every page ranking for this question prices a build: what a company charges to make the thing in the first place. The one that does price the running side gives category headings and aggregate ranges, not a named vendor’s published rate. This page prices the invoice that arrives afterwards, whether or not anybody touches the code, with every line taken from the pricing page of the company that sends it.

A worked example of a small production web app comes to about $21 a month at ten users and about $229.80 at a thousand for the priced lines, using published plan prices and metered rates read on 30 August 2026; the builder subscription, model API calls, store fees and your domain sit outside those totals. Plan fees barely move between those two columns. The meters do all of the growing.

How much does it cost to run an app each month?

Three subtotals for the priced lines, from the vendors’ own published rates on 30 August 2026: about $21 a month at ten users, $29.98 at a hundred, and $229.80 at a thousand. Add your builder subscription, model API calls, store fees and domain for your own bill. Every line below is one named plan price or one metered rate, and the assumptions behind the counts sit under the table.

Each figure below comes from the pricing or usage page of the company that charges it, read 30 August 2026, one page per vendor, and the totals are arithmetic on those published rates rather than a copy of anybody’s invoice: no account was opened and no AxonBuild or customer invoice was read to build this page.

The columns assume one small production web app: one deployment, one database, one email sender, one text-message sender, one map on one screen, one payment processor. Per user per month they assume one outbound text message, five emails, twenty map loads, and one payment of $20 from one user in ten.

Vercel’s pricing page prints Pro at “$20/mo.” on 30 August 2026, and its plan card calls Pro “Everything you need to build and scale your app” against a Hobby plan described as “The perfect starting place for your web app or personal project”. An app taking card payments is not that, so Pro sits in all three columns and the smallest column is not zero. Supabase’s pricing page prints Free at “$0/month” the same day, and on the assumption of a few hundred megabytes of data, no large files and modest transfer, none of these three columns crosses a published Free database allowance, so the database line holds at $0 the whole way across. Resend’s pricing page prints Free at “$0/mo” for “3,000” emails a month and “100 emails a day”, and Pro at “$20/mo” for “50,000”; five emails per user puts 5,000 a month and about 167 a day on the thousand-user column, which fails both Free ceilings at once. Twilio’s United States SMS pricing page prints outbound long-code messages at “$0.0083” and an AT&T outbound carrier fee of “$0.0035”, so each message is priced here at $0.0118 and one per user gives $0.12, $1.18 and $11.80. Google Maps Platform’s pricing page gives the Maps JavaScript API Dynamic Maps Essentials SKU “10,000” free events a month and then “$7.00” per 1,000 in the 0 to 100,000 tier; twenty loads per user is 200, 2,000 and 20,000 events, so only the last column pays, on 10,000 billable events, which is $70.00. Stripe’s pricing page prints the standard online rate as “2.9% + 30¢” per successful transaction for domestic cards, so a $20 payment costs $0.58 plus the fixed 30 cents, or $0.88, and one payer in ten gives $0.88, $8.80 and $88.00. Pinecone’s pricing page prints Builder at “$20/month flat”; the first two columns assume no AI search feature exists yet, and the thousand-user column assumes one index on that plan.

Three rows carry no figure on purpose and are excluded from every total by name: the builder subscription, the model API calls, and the two app store fees. Each is priced elsewhere; the last section says where.

The shape of those totals matters more than any one of them. At ten users the plan fee is $20.00 of a $21.00 bill and the meters are a dollar. At a thousand users the plan fees come to $60.00 and the meters to $169.80, so two thirds of the invoice is usage nobody signed up for in advance.

Somewhere to serve it, somewhere to keep the data

These are the two lines every app has, and the two owners think of first when they hear running cost. On a small app they are also the least interesting numbers on the bill, because both sit on a plan fee that holds until something specific crosses a published line.

Where the front end is served has its own page, meter by meter, for owners who need the one vendor rather than the sum. The database line here is one number in a total; the plan-by-plan version, with what each tier includes and what bills on top of it, sits on its own page. What follows is the part no single-vendor page covers: what the alternatives charge for the same job, and on what unit.

Railway’s pricing page prints a Free plan at “$0” carrying “$1/month” of included usage, Hobby at “$5” with “$5/month” included, and Pro at “$20/month per workspace”, also carrying “$20/month” of included usage. Underneath the plan fee it meters by the second: memory at “$0.00000386 per GB/s”, which the page annotates as about “$10 per GB” monthly, CPU at “$0.00000772 per vCPU/s”, or about “$20 per vCPU” monthly, volumes at about “$0.15 per GB” monthly, and egress at “$0.05 per GB (services)”. People find that shape hardest to forecast, because the number is a rate multiplied by a duration nobody measured.

Neon’s pricing page prices its database the same way: Launch computes at “$0.106/CU-hour” and Scale at “$0.222/CU-hour”, storage at “$0.35/GB-month” on both, and egress with “500 GB per project included, then $0.10/GB”. A compute-unit-hour is a size multiplied by a time, so a database that stays awake costs more than an identical one that sleeps, and neither the size nor the sleeping shows up on a plan card.

Firebase’s pricing page prices App Hosting on the Blaze plan by transfer: outgoing bandwidth is “No-cost up to 10 GiB/month, then $0.20/GiB” uncached and “$0.15/GiB” cached, and App Hosting storage is “No-cost up to 5 GB Then $0.10/GB”. The older Hosting product on the same page meters daily rather than monthly, at “No-cost up to 360 MB/day Then $0.15/GB”. A daily allowance and a monthly one behave completely differently on the day a screen goes around a group chat.

One question this section cannot answer with a number, because the vendor publishes none under that name. Vercel’s storage documentation prints no database price; it says “The Vercel Marketplace connects you with storage providers like Neon, Upstash, and Supabase”, so the database on a Vercel project is somebody else’s meter and somebody else’s plan price. As of 30 August 2026, Render’s pricing page at render.com/pricing does not render a figure to an automated read, so Render is named here and is not a row in the table above.

People ask about this choice in exactly these words. One thread was titled Advice on building app. To get VPS hosting or use platform like Lovable, Floot Or ..., which is the table above with the answer left open. If the options are easier to judge side by side than as one line in a total, how the places you could put the app compare covers the choice itself.

The metered lines nobody puts in the budget

A meter has no plan fee of its own and no ceiling unless a plan or a cap is wrapped around it. It bills per thing, the thing is something a user does, and the invoice is whatever the users did. These lines turn a $21 bill into a $229.80 one, and every rate below carries the unit it is charged on, because two rates on one invoice are not comparable without it.

Text messages carry a second price

Twilio’s United States SMS pricing page, read 30 August 2026, prints outbound long-code messages at “$0.0083” and inbound at the same “$0.0083”. Picture messages cost more: “$0.022” out and “$0.0165” in. A message that never arrives is not free either, because “a failed message processing fee of $0.001 per message will be applied only to messages that terminate in a ‘Failed’ status.”

Then there is a second price on top, and that is the part that surprises people. The page says that “there are additional carrier fees per message that are automatically applied based on the end-user’s destination and carrier”, and publishes them per carrier:

On the AT&T line that is a surcharge of about 42 percent on the published per-message rate, and it is not set by the company sending the invoice. The neighbouring meters work the same way: Twilio’s United States voice pricing page prints outbound local calls at “$0.0140” a minute and inbound local at “$0.0085” under a “Pay-as-you-go Voice pricing” heading, and its Lookup pricing page prints “Formatting and validation” as free, “Line type intelligence” at “$0.008 per request” and “Inbound caller identification” at “$0.01 per request”. Vonage sells the same kind of meter, but as of 30 August 2026 its SMS pricing page at www.vonage.com/communications-apis/sms/pricing/ returns no page at all to an automated read, so nothing here says what Vonage charges.

Email is free until a ceiling with two numbers on it

Resend’s pricing page, read 30 August 2026, gives the Free plan “$0/mo” for “3,000” emails a month and adds a second constraint on the same card: “100 emails a day”. A monthly allowance and a daily one are separate cliffs, and an app that sends in bursts hits the daily one first. Past Free, Pro is “$20/mo” for “50,000” emails a month, with overage at “$0.90” per 1,000.

The other name people search for here is SendGrid, whose pricing page moved twice. The page that renders figures is now Twilio’s email API pricing page, which on 30 August 2026 prints a free trial of “100 emails/day for 60 days”, an Essentials plan at “$19.95/mo” and a Pro plan at “$89.95/mo”, both prefixed with the words “starting at”. Volume sorts those plans rather than sitting on a plan card as an allowance: re-read 31 August 2026, it says “Pricing is determined by monthly email volume and features. Select your email volume below to see which plans are right for you.”, and offers volumes from under 3,000 a month to 5,000,000 and up.

Maps and geocoding are priced per thousand calls

Three companies sell this, all three publish a free allowance, and all three count something different. Read 30 August 2026:

Mapbox’s pricing page puts those paid rates in the 100,001 to 500,000 band for temporary geocoding, the 1 to 500,000 band for permanent geocoding, and the 50,001 to 100,000 band for map loads. Apple sells the third version and publishes no price at all: Apple’s MapKit JS page states that “MapKit JS provides a free daily limit of 250,000 map views and 25,000 service calls per Apple Developer Program membership”, that Snapshots “offer a free daily limit of 25,000 unique requests per day”, and that “For additional capacity needs, contact us”. Beyond those daily limits there is no rate on the page to plan around.

Card payments are the only line that grows with revenue

Every other meter here counts activity. This one counts money. Stripe’s pricing page, read 30 August 2026, prints the standard online rate as “2.9% + 30¢” per successful transaction for domestic cards, with international cards at ”+ 1.5%” and currency conversion at ”+ 1%” on top. A disputed payment carries “$15.00” of its own.

The fixed 30 cents decides whether small payments work at all. On a $20 payment it is 1.5 percent of the sale; on a $2 payment it is 15 percent. An app selling cheap things pays a different effective rate from an app on the same plan selling expensive ones, and no plan change fixes that.

Vector search only appears once there is an AI feature

Pinecone’s pricing page, read 30 August 2026, gives Starter away free with “Up to 2 GB” of storage, “Up to 2M/mo” write units and “Up to 1M/mo” read units. Builder is “$20/month flat” and Standard is “$50/month min. usage” whose storage the page describes as unlimited and bills at “$0.33/GB/mo”. The unit is read and write units plus stored vectors rather than requests or gigabytes, a third counting system on an invoice that already had two.

Why the bill jumps when nothing changed

A thread was titled Our Lovable bill keeps climbing every month. Is this normal?, and the answer is that a bill built out of meters steps rather than grows smoothly. Every vendor above publishes the exact place its line steps, and the step is what owners experience as the bill jumping.

The named steps from the pages read for this article: 10,000 free events a month per Google Maps Platform Essentials SKU. Up to 50,000 free map loads a month on Mapbox GL JS, and up to 100,000 free temporary geocoding requests. 250,000 free map views and 25,000 free service calls a day on MapKit JS. 3,000 emails a month and 100 emails a day on Resend Free. 10 GiB a month of App Hosting transfer and 360 MB a day on the older Firebase Hosting product. 500 GB of egress included per Neon project. $1 a month of included usage on Railway Free. Every one of those is published by the company that bills it, and none of them is announced again on the day you cross it.

Two of those meters count something the owner was probably not counting. Supabase’s monthly-active-user usage page defines one as “the number of distinct users who log in or refresh their token during the billing cycle”, each unique user counted once per cycle. That counts activity rather than customers: a token refresh in a tab somebody left open is a login for billing purposes. The Twilio carrier fee above is the other kind, a rate that is not the rate on the pricing page, because a different company sets it.

A third reason turns a step into a spike. An endpoint that costs money per call, with no sign-in in front of it and no per-account limit behind it, is a meter anybody on the internet can turn. Across the 26 applications AxonBuild audited pillar by pillar in June and July 2026, the AI and model-risk pillar averaged 38.4 out of 100 among the 14 third-party apps that had a model surface at all. The method and the pillar scores behind that average are published in full. Spend limits and per-account quotas are what that pillar measures. The failure that arrives as an invoice sets it beside the other failure modes.

What is not on this bill

Four lines people expect to find here are genuinely somewhere else, each counted on a different clock.

Not one line above pays a human being; the money that buys somebody’s attention when a screen breaks is counted separately, and it is counted in hours rather than in gigabytes. What a person costs, priced by time or by the finished job, sits on its own page, not on this bill.

What the model calls cost per paying customer, and whether the plan price still covers them, is worked out per customer rather than per month. That is a different denominator from everything above, which is why the model row carries no figure.

The builder subscription is a real monthly charge belonging to whichever tool wrote the app, so it is priced by tool: what one builder’s plan and credits cost and what another builder charges per month. For one builder in particular the monthly total sits well clear of the plan fee once customers arrive, and that count belongs on its own page.

Getting the app into either store carries its own fees on its own cycle, and they are not monthly. What the two stores charge to keep an app listed is a yearly number and a one-time one, rather than a line on an invoice arriving twelve times a year.

One frame that gets published a lot cannot answer this question at all. Several sellers price ongoing upkeep as an annual percentage of what the build cost. Read the rates above and the reason it fails is mechanical: not one of them is a function of the build price. A per-message rate is set by a carrier, a per-1,000-event rate by a map vendor, a per-GB-month rate by a database company. Two apps with the same number of users and the same message per user send the same number of text messages and get the same invoice, whatever either one cost to build.

Somebody buying an app somebody else built inherits every meter on this page, and there is a separate list of what to look at before the money moves. This is what a site costs once it is up; what it cost to build is a different question with different sources. None of it is an AxonBuild price. What to write down each month

The step is visible before the invoice if you are watching the right number, and the right number differs by vendor. Somebody asking Hosting on Replit or hosting elsewhere? is asking which meter they would rather watch.

Start by writing down which unit each line on your own bill is charged in. From the pages above that is: a flat plan fee for the front end, a plan fee plus published allowances for the database, emails per month and per day, messages per message plus a carrier fee, map and geocoding events per thousand, a percentage plus a fixed fee on every payment, and read and write units for a vector index. Seven lines, seven different units, and nothing on that list is comparable to anything else on it without a conversion first.

Then pick the two or three that can actually run away and check those monthly:

  1. The metered line that costs the most in the right-hand column above. That is card payments at $88.00, up $79.20 on the hundred-user column. Maps is next at $70.00, from nothing at all the column before.
  2. Any line with a daily allowance as well as a monthly one. Resend Free and the older Firebase Hosting product both have two ceilings, and the daily one is what a busy Tuesday breaks.
  3. The count of calls to anything that costs money per call, split by whether the caller was signed in. This is the only number on the list that comes from your own code rather than a vendor’s price, and it decides whether the meter has a floor.

The vendors publish where to read the current numbers. Supabase lists its usage items at supabase.com/docs/guides/platform/manage-your-usage and links a subpage for each; the index itself prints no figure. Google Maps Platform, Mapbox and Pinecone put the tier boundaries on the pricing page itself, so allowance and rate sit on one screen. Twilio publishes the carrier fees separately from the message rate, which is why the two have to be added before either is compared to anything.

These pages tell you what your app would cost if you knew what it was doing. Finding that out is a counting job on your side, and it is usually an afternoon.

What does it cost to keep a website running once it is built?

A plain marketing site with no accounts and no data costs a domain renewal plus a hosting plan, and on prices read 30 August 2026 the hosting half can be $0: Vercel publishes a no-cost personal tier, and Railway’s Free plan is “$0” with “$1/month” of included usage. The cost of running a website becomes a real monthly figure once the site starts doing things: sending email, taking payments, calling a map, or storing customer records. Each of those adds a meter, and the meters are what this page prices.

How much does it cost to own a website?

Owning a live site costs the hosting plan, the domain, and one meter for every outside service it calls, and on a small site with no accounts that can be close to nothing per month. The moment it takes card payments it inherits Stripe’s “2.9% + 30¢” per successful transaction for domestic cards, read 30 August 2026, a cost that scales with sales rather than traffic. Website management cost, on published rates, is the plan fees plus whatever the site’s own features meter.

What does a database cost per month?

Anywhere from $0 to a usage bill with no ceiling, depending on which company you buy it from and how it counts. What is the fee on a card payment?

What moves is everything hosting touches: the database it queries, the transfer it serves, the outside services it calls. Firebase’s pricing page on 30 August 2026 puts App Hosting outgoing bandwidth at “No-cost up to 10 GiB/month, then $0.20/GiB”, which is the shape most hosting bills take once traffic is real, and Vercel’s storage documentation notes that the database comes from a marketplace provider rather than from the host.

What does it cost to upkeep an app each year?

Multiply the monthly total by twelve and you have the vendor half, which on the columns above is about $252 a year at ten users and about $2,757.60 at a thousand. That is only the machines. It does not include anybody’s time, and the money that pays a person to answer a broken screen is counted in hours on a different page. An annual upkeep figure that includes labour is answering a different question from the one this table answers.

Why did my bill jump when nobody touched the code?

Because a free allowance ended, and the vendors publish exactly where. The named cliffs on this page include 10,000 free events a month per Google Maps Platform Essentials SKU, 3,000 emails a month and 100 a day on Resend Free, 10 GiB a month of Firebase App Hosting transfer, and 360 MB a day on the older Firebase Hosting product. Crossing one of them changes nothing about your code and everything about your invoice. The other common cause is an endpoint that costs money per call with no sign-in and no per-account limit in front of it, which lets people who are not your customers spend your budget.
